 Youth Arts Co-ordinator

This is a distinct program which is a specialised position within a larger community agency.

RYSS Summary
Regional Youth Support Services Inc. is a community based, non-government organisation providing Youth Work, information, referrals, case work and transitioning to independence programs for young people on the Central Coast.  RYSS is a point of access on the Central Coast for high quality services and facilities specifically tailored for people aged 12 to 18 years.  RYSS maintains a staff of professional Support Workers and Arts Practitioners to foster social and support networks with young people and to make available assessments, referral services and specialised skills programs and facilities.

Position Summary
The Youth Arts Coordinator is based at the Youth Arts Warehouse (YAW) at Parkside Shopfront (Multi-service Youth Facility) the Co-ordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, supervision and evaluation of YAW programs and events.  This role involves developing a range of Youth Arts programs to meet the needs of local Young people in consultation with young people, the community and relevant Arts Practitioners.  The Co-ordinator then develops and promotes accessible Central Coast Youth Arts activities and events.  This position is responsible for the coordination of the Youth Arts Warehouse (YAW) facility.  This role is to fulfil the requirement of the auspice, RYSS and the submission.  This includes submission and report writing to a highly professional standard.

Key Priorities
1.    To co-ordinate youth arts activities and projects across the Central Coast and maintain the day to day operation of RYSS arts activities, projects and events
2.    To ensure the administration of the Youth Arts project is maintained
3.    Organising and providing relevant art resources and information to young people to assist with pathways for professional Arts development

Position Duties
1.    Direct Youth Services – Development of Youth Arts Programs,  Activities and Services                                                                   
•    To ensure the development , provision and coordination for a minimum of one of each of the following programs per school term through RYSS:
*  Theatre  ie weekly Fringe Youth Theatre
*  Visual Arts ie Cartooning Workshops
* Music and Events ie Music Development Course,  Metrodome events
•    Research and identify the needs of the target group in developing art programs, utilising the resources of wider Arts networks and professional Arts industries
•    Assist in the development and delivery of Art relevant programs and services, this includes the coordination of tutors, venues and resources
•    To develop art strategies in consultation with local young people and wider community to address the identified cultural needs (including events & festivals)
•    Actively promote and ensure access and equity of all young people to the Youth Arts Warehouse and arts programs
•    Young people attending the arts program may need to be referred to a relevant RYSS Youth Support Worker for assistance to address specific issues.  This provides a unique wrap around service for young participants, enhancing both personal and professional skills development
•    The Co-ordinator must have the ability to drive the organisations mini bus and hold a current drivers licence and own a registered/comprehensively insured vehicle.  Approved use of own vehicle will be supported with a vehicle allowance and accurate records must be maintained by the Co-ordinator to be submitted fortnightly to the manager

2.   Coordination of Youth Arts Warehouse (YAW)
•    Processing and co-ordination of YAW venue hire procedures
•    YAW facility co-ordination and liaison with associated building partners ensuring OH&S, maintenance and operational facility is maintained
•    Ensure that the Youth Arts Warehouse is a financially viable operation
•    Promotion and Marketing – ensure weekly (minimum) updates for the Youth Arts Warehouse using promotional strategies utilising various forms of media,   such as the Internet (ie RYSS website), local newspapers and school newsletters
•    Frequently liaise with other Youth and Arts organisations and other services to ensure the continuing development of Youth Arts Warehouse and Youth Art programs on the Central Coast
•    Actively encourage use of YAW by community based organisations which target local Youth Arts needs
•    Maximise the hire of the Youth Arts Warehouse – with the aim of hiring to outside groups a minimum of 5 sessions per week
•    In coordination with the RYSS Service Manager and Arts team organise the bookings and hiring of Youth Arts Warehouse.  Invoices and receipt of fees/bonds and all bookkeeping is conducted the RYSS Bookkeeper
•    Keep the Youth Arts Warehouse booking diary up to date and accessible to RYSS staff
•    Liaise regularly with user groups and potential user groups to enable coordination of the Youth Arts Warehouses activities

3.   Support Service Development of Arts Programs
•    To develop and promote accessible Central Coast Youth Arts activities and events
•    Seek, develop and secure partnerships with service providers and community groups (or individuals) to enhance the effectiveness and popularity of the Arts programs’ core disciplines
•    Liaise regularly with young people, agencies and co-workers on relevant youth matters and facilitate the dissemination of information
•    Supervision/training of tutors, volunteers, students, work placements and persons performing duties for RYSS (including maintenance work)
•    To act on behalf of the Service when requested
•    To act as an advocate with and for young people (where appropriate)
•    Identify and utilise art resources in the community
•    Promote youth art programs at the Centre, school and in the media etc
•    Regularly update resources and relevant network contacts
•    To develop and maintain contact with other Youth Arts Centres and Youth Arts  services in the area in accordance with priorities set with the management
•    Maintain & develop sound skills in using service equipment (includes computer, digital cameras etc) as required
•    To attend relevant steering groups/network/Interagency meetings
•    To provide monthly reports and make recommendations to the Management including setting of the projects priorities and OH&S matters
•    Development of Funding opportunities to compliment program core disciplines – including the research of available Arts grants, writing funding submissions for these Arts based grants and complete mid term and acquittal reports
•    Build and maintain relationships with the relevant funding bodies that assist with providing Art grants
•    Hosting, administration and development of the ‘Central Coast Youth Arts Consortium’

4.   Professional Support and Teamwork
•    Prepare information for and participate in fortnightly staff meetings and regularly maintain communication with co-workers
•    Participate in organisational planning activities
•    Ensure policies and procedures of RYSS are maintained as well as complying with relevant legislation, statutory requirements and other industry standards as appropriate
•    Ensure that the EEO policy is adhered to
•    Maintenance and improvement of professional knowledge and skills and identify areas of further training or professional development to assist with the role
•    OH&S practices should be followed to ensure a safe workplace

5.   Administration
•    Ensure RYSS Inc services has relevant and current art and cultural directories and pamphlets
•    To keep and maintain accurate daily records of work including a daybook, equipment loans, data on participants/referrals, survey responses and community involvement in programs as required
•    Maintain accurate records re attendance at groups, community involvement, referral, petty cash, diary, log and time sheets
•    Compile relevant statistics and data on the art programs
•    Monitor user groups use of the Youth Arts Warehouse and conditions after use
•    Provide monthly reports to the manager regarding the progress of the programs and workshops
•    Regularly update resources and relevant network contact lists
•    Meet with the Service Manager on a monthly basis for work supervision
•    Assist with the ongoing evaluation and monitoring of the project

Salary
•    SHADS Award Category 4
•    Continuance of position is subject to funding. A proportion of core funds are from Arts NSW. Private and other income sources supplement this position.

Probationary Period
A period of three (3) months then the position will be reviewed.

Further reviews/ evaluation
•    The Youth Arts Coordinator will evaluate effectiveness of service provided and review each term program to assist with forward planning
•    Monthly supervision will monitor the performance of the project
•    The contract is for 5 months of employment which will then be reviewed
•    Further employment will be subject to work performance and funding available
•    Worker performance reviewed after three months
•    Regular evaluation of position/ service will be maintained to ensure effectiveness

Selection Criteria
RYSS Inc. is seeking a suitably experienced person to fulfil the role of Youth Arts Co-ordinator.

30 hours per week
SHADS Award Grade 4

Essential Criteria

1.    Demonstrated ability to coordinate Youth Art activities programs and events (provide evidence of proven abilities to develop and coordinate a range of diverse youth arts programs and activities and the administrative processes involved)
2.    Demonstrated ability to research and address the cultural needs of young people
3.    Relevant degree/qualifications
4.    The ability to work independently with initiative and as a part of a multi faceted support and Arts team to deliver art services to Central Coast young people
5.    The ability work with a range of community groups and establish strong networks across the Central Coast region
6.    Current First Aid Certificate (or proof of enrolment to course)
7.    A practical understanding of OH&S and maintaining policy and procedures
8.    Own reliable transport, current drivers licence and comprehensively insured vehicle and an ability to drive a manual mini bus
9.    Excellent computer skills (proficient in word, excel, data bases, photo shop)

Desirable
1.    A knowledge of the Central Coast Arts scene
2.    Venue, coordination and administration skills
3.    Ability to write funding submissions
